FREECYCLE AND FARMER'S MARKET

I hadn't remembered that today was the monthly Farmer's Market until I woke up this morning. Since I needed a few things from the store anyway, I decided to drink my coffee on the run and head to Beeville. I bought a nice hanging pot stuffed with four different herbs (parsley, oregano, thyme, rosemary) and then three small pots of individual herbs (varigated leaf celery, lemon balm, epizote). I guess it is too early in the season for many garden fresh vegetables to be sold, but there were carrots and spinach, there, at least in the Emma's Farm stall, where all the great herbs were sold, and the Amish stall, where they had a variety of other things too.
These chairs were ones I got from someone who posted them on Freecycle. It was 'sight unseen' but from the description, they sounded like just what I needed. It turned out that I was a little unsure of their sturdiness for sitting, so after spray painting them sunny yellow, I am using them for plant stands. I love them! On the right is the hanging pot of herbs and on the left, the larger pot has dark sweet potato vine and epizote, while the small one has a single salvia. I hope to get photos of the other recent plantings in a day or two.

FARMERS MARKET

Here are Mathieu and Coconut home from the First Saturday Farmers Market in Beeville. We got there about 9:30. When I first started going, I made it a point to be there when it opened at 9. But then I'd see photos of it in the newspaper with vendors who weren't there when I was, so apparently a lot of the vendors get there later in the day. This time, for instance, it had been advertised that 'The Candy Man' would have a booth there. Now I don't know what or who the candy man is, but I knew Mat would be very interested. But apparently the candy man sleeps late, because there was no candy at all there. Mat made out fine, though, with a pina colada snow cone ($1.25) and a hand carved wooden pencil with red lead ($2). From the Amish, I got a raw chicken($5.50), homemade cottage cheese($3), okra($3), and whole wheat noodles($3). From other vendors I got Blueberry Jalapeno Jelly ($5), Kettle Corn($1.25) and homemade Peppermint-Tea Tree soap ($5.50). I think that was it. For once, I didn't buy any plants, although I was interested in the bat faced cuphea. Now I wish I had got it. But hopefully they'll have it there next month, too. Coconut did okay, although she was a bit nervous - especially when we got to the area where the music was loudest. There were no other dogs there, this time, while we were, although the plant man had a pen with 3 kittens.

FARMER'S MARKET

Beeville has a farmer's market on the first Saturday of each month. It just started last month. Last month I got two plants and some squash. This month there were fewer craft sellers and a good deal more vegetable, farm produce, plant and herb sellers. There were a few more baked goods stands too. I forgot my camera in the car, so took this photo on the way out, from behind the whole thing.
Here is what I got this time: squash at 3/$1.00, onions at 3/$1.00, bell peppers at 2/$1.00, a baggie of cilantro for $1.00, and a Mexican Fire Plant for $6.00. The veggie lady gave me her card. Her family sells veggies, plants and baked goods north of town on the highway. Oh - and all of her vegetables were marked as grown naturally without chemicals, which is a definate bonus! The three books I got for $1.70-something at the Goodwill Store. I had plastic store bags to drop off for them to reuse, and didn't even intend to look, but...
